The Blues

Poor little blue guy. Everyone else is happy and in love but him. This is for the Illustration Friday topic, the blues. Maybe I should have done something hockey-themed. Guys beating the crud out of one another would have been much happier, I think.

In lighter news, Kieran and I watched The Castle of Cagliostro. All I have to say is, why don't filmmakers make more cartoons for adults in America? And I'm not talking about adult cartoons, those don't count.

Alice's Tears

Another piece for the Cranky Yellow show. I've had this one drawn for months, but have only now colored it. I'm glad that I waited, though, since I had an epiphany just today about how to really use Painter to full effect. I don't think this would have been as good if I had done it earlier, so I guess sometimes procrastination works to my benefit. Not often, but once in a blue moon.

Smaller & Smaller & Smaller

I'm working on an Alice-themed solo show at Cranky Yellow, so when I saw this week's Illustration Friday Night topic, I knew what I was going to do immediately.

I want to know how many people can read the writing on the cupcake. Is it obvious enough, or should I rework it? It's such a familiar story to me that it's hard to tell if it's working or not.

I also have prints in the shop.

Reptilian Halo

I did this for the Inspire Me Thursday topic, Square. I was trying to think of what to do, when I realized that I had a pile of square matboard sitting right next to me from my last batch of matted prints. I wanted to play with shapes, so I put a circle in the square and made it only slighly asymmetrical.

I have prints in the shop.

I Just Love Multi-Post Days

I went over to my dad's house tonight, and we took pictures of the moon. I have a few more images on my Flickr page, and Dad promised to put some up on his, but I think he went to bed too early to finish messing with them. Hopefully they'll be up soon.

Color Me!

This is the other coloring book that I made for Strange Folk. I've just uploaded it to the shop. I can't wait to make another one, but I need to make a few more themed illustrations first. My next two books will be an Alice in Wonderland one and a Ghostie one.

Juggle

This started as an illustration about juggling rent payments with other bills, but somehow it managed to transform itself into this. I first got the idea when I was juggling apples when Kieran and I went apple picking. I never can quite figure out how these ideas evolve. I once took a philosophy class relating to how scientists come up with their theories. I'd be interested to take a similar class based on how artists come up with their imagery.

I have just uploaded prints to the shop.

Apple Pickin' Time

Kieran and I went apple picking at Eckert's today. Yum!

By this time of the year, most of the apples had fallen off the tree. They all fermented and smelled like a cross between hard apple cider and cider vinegar.

This little guy came home with a piece of the tree.

Now it's time to make some apple crisp. Kieran and I call it Apple Crips. This, of course, is the arch-nemesis of the Bloods Oranges.

Strange Folk Photos

Thanks to David's generosity, I now have a couple of photos to share from Strange Folk.

This is my side of the tent, which David and I split. There is one thing that I neglected to mention in my last post: I virtually never sell any artwork. It seems to sell just fine on Etsy, but come craft fair time, no one wants it. Everybody loves it and tells me how wonderful it is, but no one ever buys it. I matted 90 prints for this fair and only sold one. I even tried putting it on greeting cards and ACEOs, since I thought the problem might be that I only had one price point, but still no luck.

I really don't mean to complain; I just wonder why that is. If any other artists (or anyone, really) can shed some light on the situation or provide some suggestions, I'd be eternally grateful.

This is the whole tent. I really loved the contrast between my side of the tent and Cranky Yellow's. Also, you can see how floppy the tent was, and this was after quite a bit of inventive fixing. Back to the store it goes, and I'd appreciate suggestions on a good tent brand, as well. Anyone have a tent they just love? I really want one with a white top and walls, but that seems to be a tricky thing to find.

Strange Folk Goodies

Strange Folk Festival was really good. I even managed to walk away with a few goodies.

This is a Pencil Sprite by Das Kaninchen. She was super-sweet and even knew my work, which was really exciting for me. I traded a ghostie plaque and a mushroom for this little guy and one of her amazing Fibonacci brooches.

This is Sarah Ogren's "Mom" collage, which I love. I hung it up next to one of my ghostie plaques, but not the one that I traded.

Other excitement happened, including a lot of people who recognized my work from around St. Louis and beyond. I also got to meet StellaLoella of Etsy fame, who was kind enough to put one of my prints on the front page the day of the festival.

I may write more about the festival, especially if David can provide me with some photos (I never manage to take a picture of my table at craft fairs, and my tent was a disaster that I'd rather forget), but right now I'm still battling fatigue from lack of sleep and a push-up contest with Kieran.
