Emeralds & Oz

11-emerald-oz1

I had an idea for felt gemstones in my sketchbook that simply wouldn't stay put. It insisted that I actually create the gems, and, fearful for my life, I acquiesced. Well, OK, so my ideas aren't that scary, but it's generally best for my health to listen. The gemstone idea also insists that I create a tutorial, so that is forthcoming.

In addition to stitching lots of felt, I also started working a temporary job at Powell's, which has been tons of fun. Of course, a person like me can't work at a place like that without succumbing to the employee discount from time to time, so I decided to add The Wizard of Oz to my library. I was thrilled to find a beautiful version that I simply adore.

Throughout the book, the illustrations are done using spot color, which means there is only one color at a time. Usually, this means that color can't play a large role in the illustrations, but the publisher was rather clever in this case. The book is divided into sections with different colors for each theme. For instance, the scene with the poppies has red illustrations, and everything in Emerald City is in green.

As if that weren't enough, check out the endpapers:

Unfortunately, this copy of the book doesn't have an ISBN, but it is published by The Reilly & Lee Co. if you're interested in finding a copy of your own. I think I may have begun a new collection, and I'll be on the lookout for sequels at work today.

From One Mutant to Another

I'm very excited to announce that my work has been included in a book, Hoopla: The Art of Unexpected Embroidery. Come meet me and other local artists involved with this book at the book signing at In Other Words (the feminist bookstore featured/mocked on Portlandia) on October 10 at 6:00 p.m.

Ever since I was a little girl, I've always dreamed of being published and doing a book signing event. I think that gives you a little insight into what kind of a nerdy little girl I was.
