A Mental Exercise

02-thanksmaze1

I decided last night that I absolutely needed to try to create a maze. It took some time to get the hang of it, but it was really a fun project. It will take a little time for me to clean it up and make it presentable enough to show exactly why I decided to create a maze, but I like the way the sketch turned out.

I was a very happy lady when I got to the end and it actually functioned like a maze.

My work? Kawaii? Never!

22-jellybeansprouts

My computer is finally back, and it's better than ever. I can breathe easy again.

To celebrate, I finished this jelly bean sprout fabric I started a month or so ago. I've entered it in the Spoonflower kawaii fabric-of-the-week contest, so if you like it, feel free to vote for it. There are (as usual) a ton of other wonderful designs, so check them out and get a cavity or two from all the sweetness.

And, before I forget, happy first-day-of-fall to one and all. (Or spring, depending upon where you live.)

At Long Last

29-website

A project two years in the making—I've finally updated my portfolio Web site. It's one of those things that gets more and more intimidating the longer I procrastinate, but I finally got the nerve a few weeks ago to get started on it, and little by little it was accomplished.

Such a feeling of relief.

Fancy Schmancy Button Packaging

10-button6pack

Just a quick post today to say that every time I do a big craft bazaar, I get excited about packaging. This is my newest item, the make-your-own button six-pack, inspired by my days of working at a liquor store.

I sometimes wonder if I'd be as interested in packaging if I'd studied something other than graphic design, and then I start to wish that I could investigate an alternate-universe Cate to observe what would happen if many things had gone differently in my life. Then I start to ponder chaos theory. And finally I realize it'd probably be best to put down my work, go to bed, and start fresh in the morning.

Anyone else have similar thought patterns?

Web Site Redesign

Another Web site redesign. For the most part, it doesn't look much different from what came before, but the real change lies in the code. I've made it much easier to add new pieces of artwork and much harder to stretch out the design in weird ways. There are still a few bugs, and some images need to be resized, but it's almost done.

I love redoing my site. It's like changing around the furniture in a room. It somehow gives me a fresh perspective on everything. Very Zen.

Me? A Designer?

The project that had to be done by the end of the week, whose incomplete status was punishable by removal of my precious Squid, who is a cat, not a cephalopod, and which would seem to prove that I am not entirely a fine artist is done. My little Squidster is safe, but for how long?

I'm working on steadily decreasing my dependence on the regular 9 to 5 job, and part of that is obtaining more freelance design clients. This week, I went through all my old projects and put together a Web site showcasing my design.

St. Louis Web Site

Click the image to view the site.

This is a Web site that I made back in college about a few of the lesser-known attractions around St. Louis. I always meant to add to it, but somehow it just never happened. I decided to repost it since I just entered it into the current Craftster Challenge. You can vote on it if you're logged into Craftster.

P.S.: I just started watching Lost tonight, so don't expect to see much by way of new work from me until we finish watching the first season. The show seems to be hell bent on making me a useless member of society. I did get a new paint palette for some gouaches I bought in college and never used, so if I enjoy those, you might see something from me.

{Almost} Done

I've finally (almost) finished my Web site. Take a look around, and, if you don't mind, let me know if you see anything wrong. It's still very much a work in progress. Still, it's been a couple of years since I've had a Web site that's even close to current, so I'm happy to have something online now.

Finally, A Design!

These are tags for the Amigurumi pieces I will be selling at the craft fair Saturday. I guess the next step is getting something up at beeskneesindustries.com. As you can see, there isn't a lot of content yet...

Graphic Design?

First, the cuteness:

Sashimi cuddled herself up in Kieran's jacket on the couch and has yet to move. She's such a devoted little kitty, and probably the best snuggler I've ever met.

I recently took on a freelance graphic design project. It's for a great non-profit organization devoted to teaching immigrant and refugee women English so that they can make a better life for themselves here. The main project is a cookbook with recipes supplied by the foreign women in the organization, but that part is a little ways off in the future. In the meantime, I'm working on branding so that the organization can have an easily recognized logo. They supplied me with the globe image and asked me to build something else around it. Here's my first attempt:

I'm a bit nervous about this project, since it's been almost a year since I've done graphic design, or any art, for that matter, for anyone other than myself. My last experience with graphic design was pretty miserable, so now I seem to be stuck with a bit of creative block. I'm still very excited to be helping out such an awesome group, though, so hopefully that will help me out.

And, yes, I know I promised crafts. I'm just waiting for a bunch of the finishing-touch supplies to arrive in the mail, along with something else very exciting that I hope to post about soon.
