Solo Show at Tilde

26-tildeshow1

This August, I have a solo show at Tilde here in Portland. It's been a little while since my last show, and I'm looking forward to putting everything together for it. This will be a collection of new embroideries, and I've been stitching away on some new designs.

I'll be sure to share my progress as I move along.

A Month of Firsts

28-ghostshowcard

I was invited to take part in the Ghost Show at the Pony Club Gallery, one of my favorite galleries here in Portland, this coming First Thursday. I always love working with the themes they provide and have had fun creating some new pieces for this show. I'll share photos of the work as soon as I have something ready to show.

Once I'm finished with those pieces, time willing, I hope to take part in the Cybernetic Easter show at Home Bass on First Friday. How can I resist the theme of robot bunnies?

Up, Up, & Away!

31-InOtherWords2

The show is now up at In Other Words. You can see it there now through the end of April. If you check it out, I'd love to hear what you think!

This is the whole show, in one tiny photo. Click to see it larger:

I'll share the rest of the embroideries throughout the month as I finish a couple of other little projects for them.

Irregular Print Sale!

20-irregularprints

A sale of irregular prints, that is. Not an irregular sale of prints. With each new batch of prints, there is inevitably a little bit of trial and error. I invite you to take advantage of my error.

In the profile section of my shop, I have listed a selection of prints, each of which has some small defect. I used to simply collect these prints in drawers and bins in my studio, certain that I'd come up with a perfect use for them, but then the prints began collections of their own (mostly of dust).

And so it came to be that a year or so ago I began offering my irregular and defective prints at craft bazaars. They were so wildly popular there (with nary a customer able to identify the defect that had seemed so glaring to me at the time), I have decided to offer them to my Etsy shoppers as well.

All you have to do to obtain your very own original Cate Anevski mistake is make a purchase (of any size, shape, or color) in my Etsy shop, take a look at the list in my profile, and let me know which print you'd like to receive with your order. In other words, you get a free print with any purchase at all.

And best of all, you'll be lending me a much-needed hand in clearing out my studio. Why, thank you!

We Have a Winner!

24-pancake

Have I mentioned lately how much I adore all of my lovely blog readers? I wish I could give each of you a heart-shaped blueberry pancake!

I'm so happy with the turnout of my latest giveaway. The winner this time around is Heidi, who blogs at My Hiding Place in Cyberspace. (Just a quick FYI: Heidi's blog does contain some mildly X-rated, or perhaps only W- or V-rated material, so take caution if your not-so-understanding employer is reading over your shoulder.) I really loved Heidi's comment:

"Wonderful illustration! The creatures of the ocean have long fascinated and horrified me. Cryptozoology cannot come up with creatures that are creepier than such wonders as the chimera, dana octopus squid, fangtooth, and ocean sunfish. I would sooner encounter Nessie than the cute tiny (5 inch) blue ringed octopus whose venom is so powerful it can kill a human (and no known antidote!)"

I couldn't agree more! Just when I think nature couldn't get any crazier, it does, which is why I love it so.

Thanks to all of you very much for playing along. And, as usual, be on the lookout for more giveaways in the not-too-distant future. (a.k.a.: As soon as I dig out my watercolors and paint a few more illustrations.)

Yay! Hooray! A Giveaway!

16-serpent

As promised, I'm having another random giveaway. The item in question is an ink and watercolor illustration of a sea monster that I created shortly after new Nessie footage was revealed.

To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment on this post (along with a way for me to get ahold of you) before Saturday, July 24. At that point, I'll choose one winner and announce it on my blog. To make things interesting, I'd love to hear your favorite potentially real mythical ocean-dwelling beast. Mine is the megalodon. While not technically mythical, they are said to be extinct, but I'll never give up on their existence. How can the world go on without 70-foot sharks roaming the ocean?

I also found some more of the hand-colored prints of this illustration in my studio, so I've listed them in my shop, in case you're not the gambling type.

Good luck!

Cephalopods in Love

01-podsinlove1

This piece of marine amour is my submission to the upcoming show Diorama Drama at the Pony Club gallery here in Portland. (625 NW Everett St., Portland, OR)

I had an opportunity to sneak a peek at some of the other pieces in the show today when I dropped of my work, and it looks like visitors are in for a treat. This promises to be a pretty fun show this coming Thursday, June 3. Hope to see you there!

My Gift to You?

10-giveaway

Giveaways are one of my favorite things, whether I'm the receiver or the giver. Either way, it's fun times!

I've marked down a bunch of the original paintings in my shop in an effort to clean out my studio to make room for the new, and I decided to do a couple of giveaways with some of the paintings, too. (Yep, that was plural paintings, so if you don't win this round, don't fret!)

The rules: Just leave me a comment on this post to enter. The comment must be made before Tuesday, May 18th, which is when I will draw the winner, and it must include a way to get ahold of you. If I select you, I'll send along this little original watercolor painting of a night sky nymph.

Any comment will count as an entry, but if you'd like to make things interesting, I'd love to know your favorite song at the moment. To kick things off, mine's "Little Red Riding Hood" by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, which I can't seem to stop humming while working on my latest project. :)

Good luck to one and all, and thanks for playing!

An Artist A Day Auction

09-artistaday4

The piece I showed in my live art blog post a little while back is now available for auction. All funds raised will go to Schoolhouse Supplies, which is a free store where teachers can obtain school supplies at no cost.

09-artistaday2

There is a lot of other art available in the auction as well from some very amazing local artists, so be sure to take a look at everything. Take home some wonderful art and support a great cause, all in one easy step. The auction ends this Thursday, May 13, with a fun reception on that date from 6 to 8 p.m.

A Day of Live Art

This past Friday was a day filled with live art. I took part in An Artist a Day at Muse Art & Design (a wonderful art supply store, if you haven't been), where I painted in the shop window. I came up with this little guy, who I'd attempted to paint before but was undone by a liquid frisket disaster. This new version is much more what I had in mind.

04-Inner-Demons

This is one of the largest paintings I've done, weighing in (inappropriate term, I know...) at 16" x 20". I just may be tempted to work even larger in the future, but I think I should learn to use acrylic paints first.

While I was creating art live, Kieran was busy becoming live art. He found a great tattoo artist at Jackelope, and decided to begin a new piece he's been dreaming of for the past few months.

04-kierans-tattoo

Take note of his "Witness the Birth of Fear" shirt. I have one too, and we wear them to bed as matching pajamas. We also have matching Chucks and galoshes. Yeah, we're one of those couples, and I love it.

Two Nice Things

Nice things are the best, aren't they? I recently received two nice compliments to blog about.

12-tasty-threads

First, the folks over at Tasty Threads asked me to submit my Cross-Section of a Cloud design to their site. From what I gather, they're similar to Threadless and other t-shirt voting communities, but with an environmental bent, which is great. Take a look around; their site is rather new, but they already have some great talent on there. (And, of course, feel free to vote for me. :)

12-brillante

Secondly, the very kind Nyx Creations nominated me for this award. So, here's the deal:

The rules of accepting are as follows:
1) Put the logo on your blog
2) Add a link to the person who awarded you.
3) Nominate at least 7 other blogs.
4) Add links to those blogs on yours.
5) Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs.

Unfortunately, I've been bad about reading other people's blogs lately, so I'm not positive who has been nominated and who has not. Nonetheless, here's my list:

Black Lily Pie
Chaotic Black Sheep
Coffee & Confines
Cranky Yellow
I'm With Sully
Lemurgurl
Subculture of One

Chesterfield Arts

The opening last night was really wonderful! I got so much positive feedback on my work, which is always inspiring. I owe a big thank you to the women who put the show together at Chesterfield Arts (and to any men who were behind the scenes that I did not meet).

I'm sick today, so even though I'm supposed to be meeting the newest (and only) baby in my family, I'm stuck at home with a sore throat and no voice. Hopefully, that will force me to get some work done and I'll have another post for you today, but I may just veg out watching The Last Unicorn for the 100th time.

Apply! Apply! Apply!

Cranky Yellow just released the call for artists for their Crammed Organisms show. It'll be the biggest plush show in the world! (But only if you follow the directions in the title of this post.) I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with.

Girls! Girls! Girls!

The Girls! Girls! Girls! show is up and running at Cranky Yellow. David did an amazing job making the space look spectacular, so everyone should go and have a look. The show will be up until November 30th, so you have a bit of time left to see it. Don't forget to check out the rest of the shop while you're there!

200th Post!

Yep, that's right. I've posted 200 times on this blog. What have I said? I really couldn't tell you. I guess you'll just have to check the archives.

I'm blogging from out of town again, which just tickles me for some reason. (Yeah, that's right, I said tickle. You wanna fight about it?) Handmade Chicago was a great success. I covered all my costs (which means I just got a free trip to see Bridget), and I had a good time. There were a bunch of great sellers there, including Recycled Rings, Craft Leftovers, Prix Prix, Les Vieux Jours, and Lindsey Wisz (who is an amazing illustrator and promised to email me as soon as she gets a Web site going). Meeting online sellers in real life is another thing that tickles me, so today was an all-around good day.

I also got the pencil parts of two drawings done today. They're just little fun things, and I can't wait to finish them. There are also a couple of big-hatted drawings in the works, so be on the lookout.
